Day in the Life      

The Medical Assistant (MA) provides outstanding support to physicians and healthcare providers while providing exceptional care to patients and customers within the clinical scope of an MA. The MA ensures that patients are welcomed in a warm and friendly manner and sees that their needs and expectations are met. MAs are responsible for ensuring the smooth operations in the fast-paced environment of the clinic with the goal of a positive patient experience with every encounter.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performing administrative office procedures; coordinating appointments and procedures for patients, gathering and managing necessary documents (i.e. medical records, test results, etc)
  • Triage patients and respond to phone calls and messages
  • Performing clinical activities and procedures including; obtaining patient history and vital signs; including weight/height, and triaging patients upon arrival including Macra/MIPPS requirements
  • Preparing and maintaining examination and procedure rooms
  • Assisting with examinations, procedures, and treatments (i.e. applying casts, DME's, removing sutures, staples and other related duties
  • Perform injectable set up
  • Perform pre-authorizations for surgeries, injectables and other procedures indicated
  •  Submit ERMA referral for Advocate HMO patients if necessary
  • Recognizing and responding to emergencies
  • Coordinating patient care information in patient records
  • Ensuring availability expiration dates of supplies Knowledge of proper operation of equipment in the examination and procedure rooms
  • Assisting and maintaining a clean and safe work environment
  • Maintain OSHA and HIPAA compliance at all times
  • Completing other comparable duties and assignments as directed by Physician, Physician Assistant and/or Clinical Staff Manager

COMPETENCIES:

  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing to document/record information in English
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction and work within a team setting
  • Ability to be flexible with schedule to accommodate the Practice
  • Strong knowledge of medical insurance coverages
  • Knowledge of Pharmaceuticals
  • Knowledge of ICD 10 and CPT coding

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an accredited medical assistant program, and have received certification is preferred
  • CPR certified preferred
  • Previous experience in Orthopaedics setting preferred and urgent care setting is a plus
  • Experience with Electronic Medical Records systems and other medical systems a plus

Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

  • Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time
  • Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Requires working under stressful conditions and having a flexible schedule
  • Potential exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids
  • Travels between both locations Oak Lawn and Orland Park
